Tehran is willing to reinitiate nuclear talks with Washington provided that it is treated with "respect" and "honor", Tehran's top diplomat has announced.

The Iranian diplomat said only diplomacy worked, and revealed recent overtures had originated from go-betweens to resume negotiations with the Trump administration. He asserted Iran did not have secret atomic facilities, and Tehran was not yet able to permit the International Atomic Energy Agency to access attacked atomic facilities for safety concerns.

Walking a Difficult Path

The foreign minister is treading a complex route since Iran wishes not to be seen to be proceeding from a stance of vulnerability, and he insisted repeatedly that Iran had arisen stronger militarily and psychologically from the joint assault on its atomic facilities in June.

He was speaking at a strategic meeting in Tehran where he reaffirmed that Iran had "an inalienable right to process nuclear material within its borders that it will never give up" – the primary cause of the impasse in the earlier negotiations.

Previous Talks Suddenly Concluded

The earlier sessions of negotiations between the US and Iran were ended suddenly and hostile termination on 12 June when Israel, with Washington's assistance, struck Iran's enrichment centers in a two-week conflict that ended with the American leader asserting the facilities had been eliminated. Following this, Western states employed their privilege to reimpose UN-wide sanctions, but Iran asserts they have not had a major impact.

Ideal Resolution Offered

Iranian officials said they felt they had achieved a "perfect agreement" to the uranium processing matter in previous talks, when it was settled an Iran-based consortium with Washington's engagement could process nuclear material. Each party would have been able to claim victory since domestic enrichment would have remained and the US could be certain that Iran's atomic project was solely for peaceful purposes.
