England along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and the Scots also share a group once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
